Eugene Robinson’s article on carbon dioxide as a “toxic substance” is misleading in so many ways. CO2 is plant food necessary for all life on earth. No plants, no humans. CO2 is a trace gas that has little to do with changing climate. Ice-core samples dating as far back as 600,000 years ago show that increases in CO2 lag behind warming spells by an average of 800 years. This scientific evidence proves that rising temperatures are responsible for the rise of CO2 levels in the atmosphere, not the reverse. Climatologist Ian Clark agreed, “You can’t say that CO2 can drive climate; it certainly did not in the past.” This was very evident during the 1940s-1970s when CO2 increased and world temperatures plunged.

The question now arises: why is our government trying to exterminate fossil fuels when CO2 has little if any effect on climate? Why are we destroying our economy and suffering from sky-high gas prices for little possible gain? Who would advance such a destructive agenda that could destroy America’s economic future?
