Taking a look at who holds student debt in California

“Taking a look at who holds student debt in California,” Monterey Herald – August 30, 2022

Actual facts can be so revealing. This from the Education Data Initiative.

3,823,700 California residents have student loan debt.

The average debt per borrower is $37,084.

9.7% of residents owe student loan debt.

16% of the state’s indebted student loan borrowers owe less than $5,000.

20.2% owe $20,000 to $40,000.

2.9% owe more than $200,000

9.7 % of residents owe student loan debt. Rounded up that’s 10%.

39% have debt.

So that means 90% of us are going to contribute $10,000 out of our hard-earned money to people that didn’t plan adequately on their choice of college and classes.

That also means that 61% of the people that did go to college somehow managed to pay off their debt. This proposal seems to punish the 61% for being responsible.

Maybe there should be one more class that the 39% take from the 61% on how to balance a budget. Maybe we should make sure that nobody with student debt is allowed to enter public office and have control over public budgets.
